Tape

Packing Tape for Shipping: Types, Brands, Tips

The wrong tape causes boxes to burst in transit — one of the most avoidable shipping disasters. Use purpose-made packing tape (not masking, duct, or cheap clear tape) and apply it correctly to keep boxes closed through carrier handling.

Types of Packing Tape

Clear polypropylene tape

Standard clear tape, good for most ecommerce.

Best for: General shipping, light-to-moderate weight

Brown Kraft tape

Paper-based tape activated by water — eco-friendly.

Best for: Sustainable brands, heavy boxes

Reinforced paper tape

Paper tape with fiberglass threads for extra strength.

Best for: Heavy shipments, oversized boxes

Filament tape (strapping)

Strong tape with embedded fibers running lengthwise.

Best for: Securing large or heavy packages

Dispenser tape

Tape designed for automatic dispensers.

Best for: High-volume packing stations

Practical Tips

  • 2-inch width is standard — provides enough surface for a proper seal
  • H-taping method: seal the center seam + both end seams. Tape them together to form an H across the top
  • Don't use masking, duct, or electrical tape — they don't hold under shipping stress
  • Kraft paper tape is now recyclable with the box, unlike plastic tape
  • Buy 6-12 rolls at a time for meaningful bulk savings
