Foam Wrap & Foam Sheets for Shipping — Choosing the Right Type
Foam wrap provides surface protection and cushioning without the dust and static of packing peanuts. For fragile items — ceramics, electronics, glassware — foam wrap is often the best combination of protection, cleanliness, and professional presentation. The challenge is choosing the right foam type for the item.
Types of Foam Wrap & Foam Sheets
Polyethylene (PE) foam wrap
Closed-cell foam in sheets or rolls — lightweight, moisture-resistant, non-abrasive.
Best for: Glassware, ceramics, kitchenware, general fragile items
Anti-static foam
Pink or charcoal-colored foam that dissipates static charge.
Best for: Circuit boards, RAM, CPUs, any electronics sensitive to electrostatic discharge
Foam pouches
Pre-formed foam sleeves that items slide into — faster than wrapping.
Best for: High-volume packing of consistently sized items (glasses, bottles, small electronics)
Foam-in-place / polyurethane foam
Two-part expanding foam that conforms to item shape inside the box.
Best for: Oddly shaped, high-value items where custom-fit protection is worth the cost
Sizing Reference
Foam sheet thickness ranges from 1/16 in (light surface protection) to 1/2 in (heavy cushioning). For most ecommerce fragile items, 1/8 in or 1/4 in sheet foam is sufficient. Use thicker foam (3/8–1/2 in) for heavier items that could compress thinner foam to ineffectiveness.
Practical Tips
- •Foam wrap alone doesn't provide cushioning against drops — pair with a correctly sized box that allows 1–2 inches of cushioning on all sides
- •Closed-cell PE foam is moisture-resistant; open-cell foam absorbs liquid — use closed-cell for anything that might encounter damp conditions
- •Anti-static foam is not optional for circuit boards — standard foam can build and discharge static charge, destroying components
- •Foam pouches for glassware (wine glasses, lab equipment) dramatically speed up packing for high-volume operations
- •Foam roll cuts cleanly with scissors or a box cutter — pre-cut rolls to common lengths for your item sizes to speed up packing
