Shipping Cost by Weight
Every weight class from under 1 lb to freight on one page. Start with the master rate matrix — one row per weight, lifted from each weight guide’s pricing table — then jump to a weight for its full guide: typical pricing by service, which carrier wins by zone, dimensional-weight notes, packaging specs, tips and FAQs. Three weights (under 1 lb, 4 lb and 35 lb) keep their own standalone pages and are linked from the table.
Standalone weight guides
Master rate matrix — every weight class
One row per weight, sorted light to heavy, freight last. Each figure is the zone 2 / zone 8 range from that weight’s own pricing table below (or on its standalone page). A dash means that guide lists no rate for the service — USPS takes nothing over 70 lb, and Flat Rate boxes also stop at 70 lb. UPS and FedEx Ground figures are identical in every guide, so they share a column. Express services (Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air) are in the band tables.

USPS rows: USPS's own prices from July 12, 2026, shown from the online (commercial) price to the Post Office (retail) price across each weight band. UPS and FedEx rows are estimates — check their calculators; commercial accounts pay less. From October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, USPS charges temporary holiday prices — about $0.40–$0.55 more for a Ground Advantage label under 1 lb online, and $0.85 more for most Flat Rate boxes ($1.75 for the Large box).
A note on Flat Rate prices
All USPS prices in these weight guides come from USPS's price list effective July 12, 2026. From October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, USPS charges temporary holiday prices — about $0.40–$0.55 more for a Ground Advantage label under 1 lb online, and $0.85 more for most Flat Rate boxes ($1.75 for the Large box). Priority Mail Flat Rate costs the same to any US zone: Small Box $13.65, Medium Box $24.80, Large Box $34.00 at the Post Office ($12.10, $21.17 and $31.00 online). Flat Rate beats zone-based pricing only when the weight and distance are high enough — each band below says where that happens. USPS changes prices about twice a year, so check usps.com before you buy.
Regional Rate Boxes: a few bands below still mention them. USPS ended Regional Rate Boxes in January 2023; those lines are kept for reference and marked (Discontinued: USPS ended Regional Rate Boxes in January 2023, so this option is no longer available.)
How to Ship a 1 lb Package — Cost, Carrier, Strategy
A 1 lb package is one of the most common weights in ecommerce — clothing, small electronics, books, cosmetics. USPS still dominates this weight with Ground Advantage and Priority Mail, but UPS and FedEx start to become competitive at heavier weights and longer distances. Knowing which carrier wins your specific origin-destination pair saves meaningful money.
Expect to pay $7.61–$8.74 online via USPS Ground Advantage for zones 1-5 ($9.55–$10.95 at the Post Office), and $9.63–$10.67 online for zones 6-8 ($11.35–$12.90 at the Post Office). Priority Mail adds roughly $1.50–$4 at retail for 1-3 day delivery.
Typical pricing by service — 1 lb
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $7.68–$11.50 | $10.67–$19.05 | 3-5 days |
| USPS Priority Mail | $9.32–$12.65 | $15.22–$21.55 | 1-3 days |
| USPS Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box | $12.10–$13.65 | $12.10–$13.65 | 1-3 days |
| UPS Ground | $13.00-16.00 | $18.00-22.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground | $13.00-16.00 | $18.00-22.00 | 1-5 days |
| UPS Next Day Air | $50.00-65.00 | $65.00-85.00 | Next day |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage is the best default for 1 lb packages — at July 2026 prices it is cheaper than the Small Flat Rate Box ($13.65 at the Post Office, $12.10 online) in every zone. The Small Flat Rate Box only beats zone-based Priority Mail from about zone 6 at retail, so treat it as a speed option, not a savings one. At commercial plus rates, UPS Ground becomes competitive on 1 lb packages over 4+ zones distance.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight is relevant if your 1 lb package is bulky. Example: a 1 lb pillow in a 14×10×10 box may bill as 5+ lb under DIM rules. Measure dimensions and weigh packages; use the larger of actual vs DIM weight for carrier quoting.
Packaging for 1 lb
Standard 9×6×4 or 10×8×4 boxes work for most 1 lb items. Bubble mailers for flat/soft items (clothing, books). Avoid oversize boxes — they trigger DIM weight penalties without carrying the cost benefit.

- •For cross-country (zones 6-8), Flat Rate is often cheaper than Ground Advantage

How to Ship a 2 lb Package — Carriers & Costs
At 2 lbs, USPS and UPS/FedEx start to get closer in pricing — but USPS typically still wins for most routes under 500 miles. For cross-country 2 lb shipments (zones 6-8), compare USPS Ground Advantage with UPS Ground commercial rates — and if the item fits the Small Flat Rate Box ($13.65), that box beats retail Ground Advantage from about zone 5.
Expect $7.99–$12.87 online via USPS Ground Advantage ($10.80–$19.05 at the Post Office) depending on zone. The Medium Flat Rate Box ($24.80) costs more than either at this weight.
Typical pricing by service — 2 lb

Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage stays the leader for most 2 lb shipments. For zones 7-8, compare Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate — Flat Rate wins for cross-country. UPS Ground enters the conversation at high volume with Commercial Plus discounts.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight threshold: 1 cubic foot. A 2 lb item in a 12×12×12 box is borderline. Check your box dimensions against contents — oversized packaging can double the billed rate.
Packaging for 2 lb
Standard box sizes 10×8×6 or 12×9×4 work for most 2 lb items. Shoes, books, and clothing fit comfortably. Bubble wrap or kraft paper for fill around non-fragile items.

- •Commercial Plus UPS/FedEx pricing beats retail USPS at 2 lb + zones 6-8

How to Ship a 3 lb Package — Rates, Carrier, and Tips
A 3 lb package is common for books, small home goods, multi-item clothing orders, and boxed gifts. USPS Ground Advantage is still competitive at this weight, but Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes become a viable option for cross-country shipments. UPS and FedEx Ground are generally $4-6 more expensive at close zones and competitive only on long-distance commercial routes with negotiated rates.
DIM weight becomes a factor if your 3 lb item is bulky. A lightweight but large package (think a fleece blanket) will bill at a higher effective weight — keep boxes fitted to contents.
Typical pricing by service — 3 lbs
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $8.66–$12.75 | $15.75–$24.25 | 3-5 days |
| USPS Priority Mail | $9.71–$14.05 | $20.57–$31.85 | 1-3 days |
| USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box | $21.17–$24.80 | $21.17–$24.80 | 1-3 days |
| UPS Ground | $14.00-17.00 | $20.00-25.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground | $14.00-17.00 | $20.00-25.00 | 1-5 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage wins for local-to-mid-range zones (1-5). For zones 6-8, compare Ground Advantage with the Small Flat Rate Box ($13.65) if your item fits it — at 3 lb it beats retail Ground Advantage from about zone 4. The Medium Flat Rate Box ($24.80) only beats zone-based Priority Mail at zone 8.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight applies when the box exceeds 1,728 cubic inches. A 3 lb item in a large box (e.g., 14×12×8 = 1,344 cu in — under threshold) is fine. Watch out for oversize packaging on soft goods like bedding or clothing that pack loosely.
Packaging for 3 lbs
Use a 10×8×6 or 12×9×6 box for most 3 lb items. Poly mailers work for soft goods. If item value exceeds $50, add delivery confirmation and consider declared value for added protection.

- •Compare USPS Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail Flat Rate — at 3 lb, Flat Rate often wins cross-country
- •Commercial rates via Pirate Ship or Shippo save 15-25% over USPS retail on Ground Advantage
- •Right-size your box — a 3 lb item in a 20×16×16 box triggers DIM weight and bills as 10+ lb
- •Regional Rate boxes A and B were discontinued on January 22, 2023 — for a 3 lb dense parcel, price Priority Mail Cubic (commercial rates) against Ground Advantage (Discontinued: USPS ended Regional Rate Boxes in January 2023, so this option is no longer available.)
- •For heavy-but-small items (like rocks or metal parts), DIM weight is not an issue — only actual weight matters

How to Ship a 5 lb Package — Best Carrier by Zone
At 5 lbs, the carrier calculation shifts. USPS wins for zones 1-4 and with Flat Rate for heavier zones. UPS and FedEx Ground become genuinely competitive at zones 5-8, especially with commercial account discounts. For business-to-business shipments, UPS/FedEx with DIM optimization can beat USPS here.
Typical 5 lb cost: $9.70–$19.19 online via USPS Ground Advantage ($12.95–$26.05 at the Post Office), $15-25 via UPS/FedEx Ground, or $24.80 for the Medium Flat Rate Box (any zone).
Typical pricing by service — 5 lb

| USPS Ground Advantage | $8.66–$13.55 | $15.75–$26.05 | 3-5 days |

| UPS 2nd Day Air | $35.00-50.00 | $50.00-75.00 | 2 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
For zones 1-4: USPS Ground Advantage is still the clear winner. For zones 5-8: Ground Advantage is usually still cheapest at this weight; if you need Priority speed, the Medium Flat Rate Box ($24.80) beats zone-based Priority Mail from about zone 6. Compare with UPS/FedEx Ground at your commercial rates. UPS/FedEx Ground becomes attractive at this weight + longer distances.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight is significant at 5 lb in larger boxes. Example: a 5 lb item in a 16×12×12 box bills under DIM rules as higher than actual weight. Always match box to contents; oversized boxes kill your margin at this weight class.
Packaging for 5 lb
Standard 12×9×4 or 14×10×6 boxes. At 5 lbs, think about protective packaging — 2 layers of bubble wrap for fragile items. Use kraft paper or packing peanuts for void fill.

How to Ship a 6 lb Package — Rates, Carriers, and Options
Six-pound packages cover kitchen gadgets, heavier books, multi-item food orders, and home decor. At this weight, USPS Ground Advantage remains competitive for zones 1-5, and Priority Mail Large Flat Rate boxes start to become worth comparing. UPS and FedEx Ground rates are typically $5-8 more than USPS for comparable residential delivery without volume pricing.
Typical pricing by service — 6 lbs
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $9.94–$14.40 | $20.68–$30.60 | 3-5 days |
| USPS Priority Mail | $11.84–$16.05 | $31.90–$46.75 | 1-3 days |
| USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box | $31.00–$34.00 | $31.00–$34.00 | 1-3 days |
| UPS Ground | $17.00-20.00 | $25.00-30.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground | $17.00-20.00 | $25.00-30.00 | 1-5 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage leads for 6 lb packages through zone 5. For zones 6-8, compare USPS Priority Mail against the Medium Flat Rate Box ($24.80) if the item fits, or the Large box ($34.00) — a Flat Rate box wins when your zone-based rate exceeds its price. UPS/FedEx ground is worth considering only for high-volume sellers with commercial accounts.
Dimensional weight notes
Six-pound items in well-fitted boxes rarely trigger DIM weight. The concern arises with items like sofa cushions, large stuffed animals, or bulky outdoor products. If box dimensions exceed 1,728 cubic inches, calculate both actual and DIM weight and use the larger for rate comparison.
Packaging for 6 lbs
12×10×8 or 14×12×6 handles most 6 lb items. For dense items (books, canned goods), go smaller. For bulky soft goods, consider a poly mailer or padded bag to reduce volume.

- •For recurring 6 lb shipments to zone 8, negotiate UPS or FedEx commercial rates — can approach USPS pricing at volume

How to Ship a 7 lb Package — Zone-by-Zone Cost Comparison
Seven-pound packages are common for boxed food gifts, candle sets, small tools, and multi-item ecommerce orders. At this weight, USPS Ground Advantage is still competitive up to zone 5, and the Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) becomes a price-competitive 1-3 day option at zones 7-8. UPS and FedEx Ground pricing at 7 lb starts to narrow relative to USPS for high-volume commercial shippers.
Typical pricing by service — 7 lbs

|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $10.02–$14.85 | $21.83–$33.15 | 3-5 days |

| USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box | $31.00–$34.00 | $31.00–$34.00 | 1-3 days |

Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage for zones 1-5. For zones 7-8, the Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) is cheaper than zone-based Priority Mail ($41.15–$46.75 at retail), and the Medium box ($24.80) beats it from zone 5 if the item fits. UPS/FedEx Ground remains expensive at retail for 7 lb without commercial rate agreements.
Dimensional weight notes
Seven pounds in a reasonably sized box (under 1,728 cubic inches) avoids DIM weight. Bulky soft items like pillows, stuffed animals, or fabric goods in large boxes are the risk category at this weight. Compress soft goods in poly bags before boxing to minimize volume.
Packaging for 7 lbs
12×10×8 to 14×12×8 handles most 7 lb items. Use foam insert trays for fragile items. For food gift boxes, add a layer of kraft paper crumple on top to prevent shifting.

How to Ship an 8 lb Package — Carrier Rates and Recommendations
Eight-pound packages span a wide range of goods: heavy hardcover books, kitchen appliances, candle collections, and larger gift boxes. USPS Ground Advantage remains competitive for nearby zones, while the Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) beats zone-based Priority Mail for cross-country 8 lb shipments from about zone 6. UPS and FedEx Ground become more attractive at this weight with negotiated commercial rates.
Typical pricing by service — 8 lbs

Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
USPS Ground Advantage for zones 1-4. For zones 6-8 and speed-sensitive shipments, the Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) undercuts zone-based Priority Mail ($35.10–$51.70 at retail) while providing 1-3 day delivery. Ground Advantage is still cheaper if speed doesn't matter. Compare all options in rate-shopping software.
Dimensional weight notes
At 8 lb, DIM weight only becomes an issue with very large boxes. A 14×12×10 box = 1,680 cubic inches — just under the USPS threshold. An 8 lb item in a 16×14×10 box = 2,240 cubic inches, triggering DIM. Size your boxes carefully.
Packaging for 8 lbs
14×12×8 or 14×10×10 handles most 8 lb items. For fragile items, use double-wall corrugated with foam inserts. Heavy 8 lb packages with small footprints (like cast iron cookware) can use smaller, denser boxes well under DIM threshold.
Browse shipping supplies guide →Tips & strategy
- •Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) beats zone-based Priority Mail for 8 lb packages going to zones 6-8
- •For dense items under 14×12×6 dimensions, DIM weight is not a concern at 8 lb
- •Check USPS cubic pricing if your packages are small and dense — it can cost less than weight-based pricing
- •UPS and FedEx Ground at 8 lb approach $30-35 retail for zone 8 — significantly more than USPS without volume pricing

How to Ship a 10 lb Package — Carrier Comparison
At 10 lbs, UPS and FedEx Ground pricing is competitive with — and often cheaper than — USPS for long-distance shipments. UPS Ground Commercial rates often beat USPS Priority Mail at this weight. Retail customers still see USPS Priority Mail as affordable, but commercial shippers should benchmark against UPS/FedEx.
Expect $11.91–$25.34 online via USPS Ground Advantage ($15.95–$39.45 at the Post Office), $20-35 via UPS/FedEx Ground, or $34.00 for the Large Flat Rate Box.
Typical pricing by service — 10 lb

|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $9.76–$16.30 | $19.19–$39.45 | 3-5 days |
| USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate | $31.00–$34.00 | $31.00–$34.00 | 1-3 days |
| USPS Priority Mail (zone-based) | $11.56–$18.25 | $29.18–$61.30 | 1-3 days |
| UPS Ground | $20.00-25.00 | $30.00-40.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground | $20.00-25.00 | $30.00-40.00 | 1-5 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
For zones 1-5: USPS Ground Advantage typically wins at retail; UPS/FedEx Ground at commercial rates. For zones 6-8: Ground Advantage is usually still cheapest; if you need Priority speed, the Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) beats zone-based Priority Mail from about zone 6, and the Medium box ($24.80) from zone 5 if the item fits. At scale with commercial accounts, UPS becomes the most cost-effective for 10 lb shipments to most destinations.
Dimensional weight notes
10 lb is where DIM weight really starts to hit. A bulky 10 lb item in a 16×14×14 box may bill as 15+ lb under DIM rules. Dense items (books, metal, canned goods) are fine. Fluffy items (pillows, bedding) need serious attention to box sizing.
Packaging for 10 lb
Standard 14×10×6 or 16×12×8 boxes. At 10 lb, double-wall corrugated is worth considering for durability. Corner protectors for fragile items. Wrap items individually if multiple per box.

Twelve-pound packages include large book sets, wine bottles, heavy home goods, and medium-weight auto accessories. Recommended carrier
The USPS Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) is the best value for 12 lb shipments to zones 7-8 at retail, and beats zone-based Priority Mail from zone 6. USPS Ground Advantage wins for zones 1-6 at retail — and in every zone online (up to $28.73). With high-volume commercial accounts, UPS and FedEx Ground can match USPS pricing from zone 4 onward.
Dimensional weight notes
At 12 lb, DIM weight is a real concern with bulky items. A 12 lb throw blanket in a 16×14×12 box = 2,688 cubic inches, billing as roughly 16-17 lb under DIM rules. Always check box dimensions against actual weight — compress soft goods into smaller boxes.
Packaging for 12 lbs
16×12×10 or 14×14×10 is appropriate for most 12 lb items. Use double-wall boxes for any fragile 12 lb shipment. Wine bottles require wine shipping kits with foam inserts — standard boxes do not adequately protect glass at this weight.

- •Wine and glass item shipping: use purpose-built wine shipping kits (available from ULINE and U-Haul) — they outperform DIY packaging
- •At 12 lb, UPS/FedEx commercial rates (with accounts) often approach USPS Ground Advantage for zones 5-8
- •Calculate DIM weight for every 12 lb package: if your box is over 1,728 cubic inches, bill weight may be 15-20 lb

Otherwise UPS Ground Commercial Plus usually beats USPS Ground Advantage at this weight for zones 5+. USPS Priority Mail (zone-based) is only competitive at very short distances.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight is major at 15 lbs. Dense items fit most boxes without issue. Bulky lightweight items (camping gear, large apparel) may get billed higher than actual weight. Target box dimensions: keep under 4,500 cubic inches for 15 lb packages to avoid DIM penalties.
Packaging for 15 lb
Double-wall corrugated recommended at this weight. Box dimensions 16×12×8 or 18×14×10 typical. Reinforced tape for the seams. Heavy items need padding on all sides (2-3 inches).

Packaging for 20 lb
Double-wall corrugated essential at 20 lb. Box sizes 18×14×10 or 20×16×12 common. Reinforced tape (3-inch-wide). Corner protection for fragile. Label clearly as 'FRAGILE' if contents warrant it.

How to Ship a 25 lb Package — Carrier Rates and Best Options
Twenty-five-pound packages cover heavy tools, large home appliances, tire and auto parts, and bulk food orders. At this weight, UPS and FedEx Ground become increasingly competitive with USPS, especially with commercial accounts. USPS Ground Advantage is still available up to 70 lb, but the rate advantage shrinks as weight increases. DIM weight is critical to check for any 25 lb package in a large box.

Recommended carrier
For 25 lb packages, USPS Ground Advantage wins at zones 1-3 but UPS and FedEx Ground become competitive from zone 4 onward — especially with commercial accounts. Priority Mail adds significant cost at 25 lb without proportional speed improvement for most use cases. Compare all options in real-time rate software before shipping.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight is a major concern at 25 lb. Many 25 lb items (car parts, large tools) are dense and fit in small boxes — DIM weight doesn't apply. But 25 lb of lighter goods (bulk coffee, clothing, cushions) in large boxes can bill as 35-45 lb under DIM weight rules. Always verify.
Packaging for 25 lbs
18×14×12 to 20×16×14 handles most 25 lb items. Use double-wall corrugated for all 25 lb shipments. Heavy items with sharp corners need corner protectors and extra foam padding. Reinforce bottom seams with 2-inch packing tape applied in H-pattern.

- •At 25 lb, USPS Ground Advantage remains competitive for short-haul (zones 1-3) but UPS/FedEx close the gap for long-haul
- •Use double-wall corrugated boxes for any 25 lb package — single-wall boxes risk bottom failure
- •Calculate DIM weight before finalizing rates — 25 lb in the wrong box can bill as 35+ lb
- •For automotive parts and heavy hardware, FedEx Ground and UPS Ground offer better tracking and liability than USPS
- •B2B 25 lb shipments (to warehouses and commercial addresses) avoid residential surcharges — significant savings for repeat routes

Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight important but often not the constraint at 30 lbs — most 30 lb items are dense enough that actual weight exceeds DIM weight. Bulky 30 lb items (bedding, large apparel) need box sizing attention.
Packaging for 30 lb
Double-wall corrugated required at 30 lbs. Box dimensions 20×16×12 or 22×16×12 typical. Reinforced tape. 'HEAVY' stickers help carriers handle correctly.

How to Ship a 40 lb Package — Cost, Carriers, and Packaging Guide
Forty-pound packages represent a transition point in shipping strategy. USPS Ground Advantage handles up to 70 lb but rates climb steeply, and UPS and FedEx Ground become genuinely competitive with commercial accounts at this weight. B2B shippers and high-volume ecommerce operations should negotiate directly with UPS or FedEx at this weight tier. Proper packaging is non-negotiable — double-wall corrugated and robust sealing are required.
Typical pricing by service — 40 lbs

| USPS Ground Advantage | $40.24–$50.35 | $124.96–$143.00 | 3-5 days |

| FedEx Ground | $46.00-56.00 | $82.00-98.00 | 1-5 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
At 40 lb, UPS and FedEx Ground commercial rates are competitive with USPS from zone 3 onward. USPS Ground Advantage still wins for zones 1-2. Priority Mail at 40 lb is expensive — the cost increase over Ground Advantage is not proportional to the speed improvement. Negotiate a direct carrier account at this weight level for meaningful savings.
Dimensional weight notes
Dense 40 lb packages (solid goods, hardware) typically have tight dimensions and no DIM weight concern. Bulky-light 40 lb packages (large foam items, outdoor cushions) are at high DIM weight risk. Measure all package dimensions and calculate DIM weight before every shipment.
Packaging for 40 lbs
20×18×16 to 24×20×16 handles most 40 lb items. Double-wall corrugated (275 lb ECT) is required. Apply reinforced H-tape on all seams. For items with concentrated weight (engines, metal parts), add cardboard dividers and cushioning to distribute load.

- •Compare USPS Ground Advantage vs UPS/FedEx for every 40 lb shipment — the gap narrows significantly at this weight
- •Request a UPS or FedEx direct account if you ship 10+ 40 lb packages per week — negotiated rates drop 30-45%
- •Double-wall corrugated (275 lb test) is the minimum packaging standard for 40 lb shipments
- •Avoid oversized boxes — a 40 lb item in a 24×24×20 box bills as 60+ lb under DIM weight rules
- •For B2B routes, verify commercial addresses to eliminate $4-6 residential surcharges per package

Recommended carrier
At 60 lb, UPS and FedEx Ground with commercial accounts are the best option — retail rates are high for all carriers. USPS Ground Advantage approaches its upper-practical-weight range at 60 lb (max 70 lb) and rates are steep. For multiple 60 lb packages to the same destination, consolidating onto a pallet and using LTL freight can be more economical.
Dimensional weight notes
At 60 lb, DIM weight is less of a concern for dense items (equipment, hardware, tools) but critical for bulky-light items (large insulation panels, giant stuffed animals, pillows). Always verify DIM weight. At this weight, DIM violations can add $20-40 to your shipping cost.
Packaging for 60 lbs
Use 275 lb or 350 lb ECT double-wall corrugated boxes. For items over 18 inches in any dimension, reinforce internal corners with corrugated angle boards. Apply 3-inch reinforced tape to all seams. Consider banding the box for extra security on heavy industrial items.

- •At 60 lb, a UPS or FedEx commercial account is nearly mandatory — retail rates are $108-130 cross-country
- •If you ship multiple 60 lb boxes to the same address, consider combining onto a pallet and quoting LTL freight
- •USPS reaches its practical weight limit at 60-70 lb — UPS/FedEx are better choices for reliability and tracking at this weight
- •Add-on insurance is important at 60 lb — base carrier liability is typically $100, well below the value of most heavy goods
- •For B2B routes, eliminate residential surcharges by confirming commercial delivery addresses

How to Ship a 70 lb Package — USPS's Maximum Weight
70 lbs is the maximum weight USPS accepts for packages. UPS and FedEx Ground accept up to 150 lbs — above 70 lbs you're exclusively with private carriers. At 70 lbs, USPS Flat Rate boxes still work and are often the cheapest option for cross-country dense shipments.
Expect $53.33–$191.31 online via USPS Ground Advantage ($64.10–$196.80 at the Post Office), $55-95 via UPS/FedEx Ground, or $34.00 via the USPS Large Flat Rate Box (if the item fits).
Typical pricing by service — 70 lb

Recommended carrier
The Large Flat Rate Box ($34.00) dominates at 70 lb for items that fit the 12×12×5.5 box — this is one of the best deals in shipping. Otherwise UPS Ground Commercial Plus is cheapest. Above 70 lbs, USPS isn't an option; private carriers only.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight rarely the issue at 70 lb — most items are dense enough that actual weight wins. For bulky 70 lb items (large furniture, equipment), check dimensions carefully.
Packaging for 70 lb
Triple-wall corrugated recommended for durability. Box dimensions 24×18×14 or larger. Heavy-duty tape. Consider pallet/skid shipping at 70+ lb for multi-item shipments.

- •70 lbs is USPS's max — above this, private carriers (UPS/FedEx) only
- •Flat Rate Box at 70 lb is the best shipping deal USPS offers — use it if item fits
- •UPS Ground Commercial Plus is typically cheapest above USPS Flat Rate
- •Consider freight (LTL) for multi-item 70+ lb shipments — often cheaper than parcel at 70 lb+
- •Schedule home pickup — don't try to drop off 70 lb packages solo

How to Ship a 75 lb Package — Parcel vs LTL Freight Guide
At 75 lb, you are firmly in heavy parcel territory. USPS Ground Advantage maxes out at 70 lb, so UPS and FedEx Ground are your parcel options. At this weight, LTL (less-than-truckload) freight becomes a serious alternative — particularly for B2B shipments to commercial addresses or for multiple packages to the same destination. Evaluating parcel versus freight is essential at 75 lb.
Typical pricing by service — 75 lbs
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground (retail) | $70.00-86.00 | $128.00-155.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground (retail) | $70.00-86.00 | $128.00-155.00 | 1-5 days |
| UPS Ground (commercial account est.) | $42.00-55.00 | $80.00-98.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground (commercial account est.) | $42.00-55.00 | $80.00-98.00 | 1-5 days |
| LTL Freight (palletized) | $100.00-150.00 | $200.00-280.00 | 3-7 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
For a single 75 lb package, UPS or FedEx Ground with a commercial account is typically the best option — retail rates are prohibitively high. If you're shipping multiple 75 lb packages to the same destination or regularly ship heavy goods, LTL freight with a carrier like XPO, Old Dominion, or R+L Carriers may offer better pricing when palletized. USPS does not accept packages over 70 lb.
Dimensional weight notes
Dense 75 lb packages (solid machinery, metal parts, stone) are typically in tight boxes where DIM weight doesn't apply. Bulky 75 lb packages (large fabric goods, outdoor furniture) need careful dimensional calculation — DIM violations at this weight add $25-50+ to shipping costs.
Packaging for 75 lbs
Use 350 lb ECT or 44 ECT double-wall corrugated. Consider wooden crating for fragile or irregularly shaped items over 75 lb. Reinforce all seams with 3-inch industrial tape. For palletized LTL freight, shrink-wrap the entire pallet and use wooden base boards for fork access.

- •USPS does not accept packages over 70 lb — UPS and FedEx are your only parcel options at 75 lb
- •Request a UPS/FedEx commercial account — retail rates at 75 lb are $128-155 cross-country, commercial is $80-98
- •For recurring 75 lb shipments, get competing LTL freight quotes from UShip, FreightQuote, or Freightos
- •Palletized LTL beats parcel for multiple heavy packages to the same destination
- •Consider installing a dock, pallet jack, or freight-rated loading setup if you regularly ship at 75 lb+

How to Ship a 100 lb Package — Private Carriers Only
At 100 lbs, USPS isn't an option — their max is 70 lbs. UPS and FedEx Ground accept up to 150 lbs, making them your carriers. At this weight, commercial rates are essential — retail pricing is brutal. Also consider LTL (less-than-truckload) freight as an alternative for items that can be palletized.
Expected pricing: $80-150 via UPS/FedEx Ground depending on zone and commercial rate.

Recommended carrier
UPS Ground or FedEx Ground with commercial rates. Compare your specific origin-destination pair. LTL freight is worth considering if palletized — often cheaper for bulky 100+ lb shipments. Retail pricing is uncompetitive.
Dimensional weight notes
DIM weight is important for bulky items. Compute DIM weight (L×W×H÷139) and compare to actual — carrier bills the higher. Dense items (machinery, parts) usually OK; bulky items (furniture, large equipment) often need freight.
Packaging for 100 lb
Triple-wall corrugated minimum. Consider wooden crates for very fragile 100 lb items. Heavy-duty reinforced tape. If item is flat/palletable, consider pallet shipping vs boxing.

How to Ship a 150 lb Package — Freight vs Heavy Parcel Comparison
150 lb is the heaviest parcel UPS and FedEx Ground accept, so this band is the parcel cap — heavy parcel, not freight. It is the only weight guide on this site that covers parcel rates between 100 lb and the 150 lb cap (retail versus commercial-account rows below); the LTL rows in the same table are the freight alternative at this exact weight. Anything heavier than 150 lb belongs in the Freight section that follows.
At 150 lb, you are in heavy freight territory. Standard parcel carriers (UPS, FedEx) technically accept packages up to 150 lb, but rates at retail are very high and LTL (less-than-truckload) freight is typically more economical — especially when palletizing the shipment. Understanding freight class, pallet requirements, and how to get competitive LTL quotes is essential at this weight.
Typical pricing by service — 150 lbs
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground (retail, 150 lb) | $140.00-175.00 | $270.00-330.00 | 1-5 days |
| FedEx Ground (retail, 150 lb) | $140.00-175.00 | $270.00-330.00 | 1-5 days |
| UPS Ground (commercial account est.) | $88.00-110.00 | $165.00-200.00 | 1-5 days |
| LTL Freight (palletized, Class 50) | $120.00-180.00 | $240.00-350.00 | 3-7 days |
| LTL Freight (negotiated account) | $80.00-130.00 | $160.00-230.00 | 3-7 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
For most 150 lb shipments, LTL freight on a pallet is the best value — especially to commercial addresses (no liftgate fees). With a negotiated LTL account through carriers like Old Dominion, XPO, Saia, or Estes, rates are significantly lower than retail. UPS and FedEx Ground commercial accounts are competitive for single-package residential deliveries where parcel tracking and speed are important. USPS does not handle packages over 70 lb.
Dimensional weight notes
At 150 lb, dimensional weight is usually not the primary concern — 150 lb packages are almost always dense enough that actual weight dominates. However, extremely bulky-light items (large foam mattresses, oversized outdoor decor) should still be measured and DIM-calculated before quoting LTL freight class.
Packaging for 150 lbs
For parcel shipping at 150 lb, use 350-400 lb ECT double-wall or triple-wall corrugated boxes with full seam taping. For LTL freight, palletize on a standard 48×40-inch wooden pallet, stack within footprint, and shrink-wrap all layers. Add top caps and corner boards for fragile loads. Mark the pallet with destination, weight, and freight class.
Browse shipping supplies guide →Tips & strategy
- •Get at least 3 LTL freight quotes — use FreightQuote, Freightos, or uShip to compare carriers instantly
- •Palletizing reduces handling damage and typically lowers rates versus floor-loaded freight
- •Liftgate service adds $75-150 for residential deliveries — confirm if your destination has a loading dock
- •Freight class (50-500) is determined by density, stowability, handling difficulty, and liability — denser items = lower class = lower rates
- •Negotiate an LTL freight account if you ship 150 lb+ regularly — 40-60% discounts off published rates are achievable
- •NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) codes determine freight class — look up your product's code before quoting
- •For time-sensitive 150 lb shipments, UPS/FedEx Ground with a commercial account is faster and more trackable than LTL

How to Ship Freight (150+ lbs) — LTL and FTL Guide
Freight starts where parcel ends: above the 150 lb UPS/FedEx Ground cap, or when a package exceeds parcel size limits. A package at exactly 150 lb is still parcel — see the 150 lb band above.
Above 150 lbs (or with very large dimensions), parcel shipping stops being cost-effective and freight takes over. LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) is the standard for single pallets; FTL (Full Truckload) is for when you have enough volume to fill an entire truck. Freight rates are quoted case-by-case — there's no simple 'zone-based' pricing like parcel.
Typical freight costs: $150-400 for a single pallet LTL depending on distance, accessorials, and commodity class.
Typical pricing by service — Freight (150+ lb)
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 8 | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| LTL Freight (1 pallet) | $100-200 | $200-400 | 3-7 days |
| LTL (multiple pallets) | $200-400 | $400-700 | 3-7 days |
| FTL (full truck) | $1,500-2,500 | $3,000-6,000 | 1-3 days |
| UPS Freight | Quote-based | Quote-based | 3-6 days |
Retail / approximate — see the Flat Rate note above.
Recommended carrier
Get quotes from multiple LTL carriers (R+L, XPO, Old Dominion, ABF, YRC, SAIA) — rates vary significantly. Freight brokers (uShip, Freightos) can aggregate quotes. FTL only worth it for 10+ pallets. For 150-300 lb parcels, UPS/FedEx Freight or LTL pallet can both work.
Dimensional weight notes
Freight rates use 'freight class' (NMFC class) that considers density, stowability, handling, and liability. Higher class = more expensive. Dense items = lower class = cheaper. This is different from parcel DIM weight but similar concept.
Packaging for Freight (150+ lb)
Palletize items for freight. Standard pallet: 48×40 inches. Stretch-wrap the pallet. Use corner protectors. Secure with bands if needed. Items must be stable enough not to shift on the truck.
Browse shipping supplies guide →Tips & strategy
- •Get 3+ LTL quotes — prices vary 30-50% between carriers for the same shipment
- •Palletize: standard 48×40 pallet is the LTL standard
- •Residential delivery + lift gate adds $80-150 to LTL quotes
- •Freight brokers (uShip, Freightos, FreightWaves) help find cheapest LTL options
- •FTL only makes sense with 10+ pallets going to same destination
- •Insurance is separate — add at quote time if needed
