Bubble Wrap Guide: Types and Proper Use

Bubble wrap is the most common protective fill for shipping. Not all bubble wrap is equal — bubble size, thickness, and whether it's anti-static or perforated all affect protection and cost.

Types of Bubble Wrap

Small bubble (3/16-inch)

Small bubbles tightly packed. Good general cushioning.

Best for: Small items, moderate protection

Medium bubble (5/16-inch)

Standard ecommerce bubble size.

Best for: Most general shipping needs

Large bubble (1/2-inch)

Larger, more air-filled bubbles.

Best for: Fragile items needing serious cushioning

Anti-static bubble

Treated to prevent static discharge.

Best for: Electronics, sensitive components

Bubble pouches

Pre-made bubble bags with sealed edges.

Best for: Quick packing without taping

Bubble mailers

Bubble wrap integrated into mailer bags.

Best for: Books, small electronics, single-item shipments

Practical Tips

  • Wrap fragile items with 2-3 layers — one layer isn't enough for drops
  • Bubble-side touching the product is the conventional method
  • Perforated bubble rolls tear off evenly — worth the small extra cost
  • Don't seal bubble wrap tight around items — cushioning works better with slight give
  • Bulk 700-ft rolls from Uline or Amazon Business are significantly cheaper per foot than retail
