Cap all lens and eyepiece openings before packaging to prevent glass contact with packing material
For telescopes, disassemble the optical tube from the mount before shipping — pack each piece individually
Wrap the optical tube in foam pipe insulation or cut foam to create a snug cradle inside the box
Do not use packing peanuts alone — they don't hold precision instruments in place; use foam blocks or custom cutouts
Place the boxed telescope in a second outer box with 2 inches of cushioning between boxes for added protection
