The Panel Is Glass — and It Fails at the Edges
A monitor looks like a sturdy plastic appliance and is actually a large, thin sheet of glass in a frame. LCD and OLED panels crack, and once cracked they are not repairable in any economic sense — the panel IS the monitor's cost. Worse, panel damage doesn't require a dramatic impact: pressure applied to the face, or a flex across the panel, is enough. That's why a monitor shipped lying flat with anything resting on it is a monitor you've already broken; you just don't know it yet.
The failure geometry is specific: edges and corners take the impacts, and force applied there travels into the panel. Corner protectors are therefore the single highest-value item in the box, and rigid facing across the screen prevents anything from pressing on the glass. Ship a monitor standing on edge, never flat, marked so handlers know which way it stands — and never let a package rest on the screen face at any point in your own packing process either.

Original Box, or Rebuild What It Provided
Monitor manufacturers ship these things across oceans by the millions, and the original packaging is genuinely engineered for it: custom-cut foam or pulp end-caps that suspend the panel by its frame, holding it away from every box surface. If you still have the original box and inserts, that is unambiguously the best packaging that exists for your monitor, and the entire job becomes putting it back the way it came.
Without it, you have to reconstruct that engineering. The principle is suspension: the panel must be held rigidly at its frame with cushioning between it and every wall of the box, so no impact reaches the glass directly. Foam blocks or thick corner-and-edge protection, rigid facing on the screen, and a box sized so the monitor cannot shift at all. Then double-box for anything valuable — outer box, cushioning layer, inner box — because a single carton transmits shock straight through. Loose fill alone is not enough here: peanuts migrate, the panel settles, and the protection you thought you had disappears somewhere over Ohio.
Stands, Arms, and Leverage
The stand is the second thing that destroys monitors in transit, and it does so through leverage. A monitor attached to its stand is a heavy panel on the end of a lever arm — every jolt the box takes is multiplied at the joint where the stand meets the display, and that joint is plastic and screws. It also makes the package larger and more awkward, driving dimensional weight up.
Remove the stand. Almost every monitor's stand detaches (usually a VESA plate or a single release catch), and packing it separately solves the leverage problem, shrinks the box, and lets both parts be immobilized properly. Wrap the stand and its base, bag the screws and any hardware, and tape the bag inside so it doesn't disappear. Curved and ultrawide monitors deserve extra attention here — their geometry makes them more awkward to support and more prone to face pressure, so they especially need shaped support at the frame rather than generic fill.
Dead Pixels, Claims, and Selling Used Displays
The used-monitor market runs on condition disclosure, and displays have failure modes buyers specifically check for: dead or stuck pixels, backlight bleed and IPS glow at the edges, uniformity, burn-in on OLED panels, and scratches on the coating. Photograph the screen powered on displaying a solid white field and a solid black field — that's the standard test that reveals dead pixels and bleed, and a seller who volunteers those images is a seller buyers trust. Disclose everything you find.
Those same images are your claim evidence. Panel damage in transit is one of the cleaner damage claims to prove — a cracked panel is unambiguous — but only if you can show the display was intact when it left. Declare real value (monitors are expensive and default carrier liability is not), photograph the packed box before sealing, and keep every scrap of packaging if the buyer reports damage, because the carrier may want to inspect it and 'insufficient packaging' is their standard defense on fragile goods. Stand off, corners protected, on edge, double-boxed, documented on and off — that's a monitor that arrives working.
