The Gimbal Is the Fragile Part
A drone looks like a rugged flying machine and contains one component that is anything but: the camera gimbal. The gimbal is a precision three-axis stabilizer holding a camera on tiny motors and delicate arms, and it is engineered for the gentle forces of flight, not for a package being dropped on a concrete floor. Gimbal arms bend, motors get knocked off-axis, and ribbon cables tear — and a damaged gimbal is a repair that can approach the value of the aircraft.
This is why drones ship with a gimbal clamp or guard, and why fitting it before packing is non-negotiable. The clamp locks the gimbal so it cannot swing, flex, or take load through its motors. If the original clamp is lost, improvise a support that immobilizes the gimbal without pressing on the camera lens — but do immobilize it, because a free-swinging gimbal in a jostled box is the single most likely thing to break on a shipped drone.
⚠️ Always fit the gimbal clamp before packing a camera drone. An unclamped gimbal swings on its motors through the entire transit — it's the component most likely to arrive broken, and the most expensive one to repair.
LiPo Batteries: The Serious Hazmat in the Box
Drone batteries are lithium-polymer packs with high energy density, and they are the most safety-significant thing most hobbyists will ever mail. The rules are the lithium rules our cameras and power-tools guides describe, applied to packs that sit at the demanding end of the range: installed-in-equipment is the simpler case; loose packs need terminal protection and individual bagging, are subject to watt-hour limits and packaging conditions, and are restricted from air transport in many configurations.
Two drone-specific practices matter. First, ship LiPos at storage charge rather than fully charged — the hobby's standard practice, and the safer state for a cell that's going to sit in a truck. Second, never ship a puffed, swollen, damaged, or crash-involved pack. A swollen LiPo is a failing cell, and a failing lithium cell in a cargo hold is precisely the scenario every one of these regulations exists to prevent. Dispose of it properly at a battery recycling point instead — it is not worth the shipping, and it is genuinely dangerous.
Props Off, Case On, Level in the Box
The rest of the packing follows from the aircraft's geometry. Remove the propellers: they protrude, they snap, they can puncture the box, and they're the cheapest part to replace but the easiest to break. Bag them and pack them separately. Fold the arms if the design allows. Then nest the drone in shaped protection — the original foam-lined case or hard case is ideal and is exactly what the manufacturer engineered for this — or build a foam cradle that supports the body without pressing on the gimbal or the camera.
Then keep it level. Mark the box THIS SIDE UP, because a drone packed level and shipped upside down puts the gimbal's weight on its own delicate arms for three days. Pack the controller separately (it has its own screen and sticks that break), bag the small parts and spare props, and immobilize everything so nothing migrates into the aircraft. Double-box anything valuable. And weigh it: a drone kit with case, controller, and batteries is heavier than it feels, and ground service is generally correct anyway given the battery rules.
Selling a Drone: Crash History and Honest Disclosure
The used drone market is knowledgeable and suspicious, for good reason: a crashed drone can look perfect and fly badly, and buyers know it. Disclose flight hours, any crash history, and any repairs — a drone that has been in a crash and repaired is sellable at the right price, while an undisclosed crash discovered by the buyer is a refund and a rating. Photograph the gimbal from multiple angles (buyers examine it first), the arms and motor mounts for stress cracks, the shell for repairs, and the battery health if the app reports cycle counts.
Include what the buyer needs to actually fly: the specific charger, cables, the controller, and — critically — mention whether the aircraft is registered and what that means for transfer, since regulatory registration follows the operator rather than being something you can hand over in the box. Insure meaningfully; drones are expensive and carrier default liability isn't close. Clamp the gimbal, pull the props, storage-charge the packs, case it, keep it level, and tell the truth about the crash: that's a drone that arrives ready to fly.
