  • The mount head contains gears, bearings and — on computerized models — electronics, all of which resent impact; if it has clutches or locks, secure them so nothing swings internally. Tripod legs and protruding hardware want padding so they don't puncture the box from inside.
  • Weigh the finished shipment: a complete telescope setup packed properly is heavier than sellers expect, and ground service is generally the right call once you're past the light bands.
  • For the used market, photograph the primary and secondary mirrors (or objective lens) under good light, noting any coating degradation, scratches or fungus, plus the focuser action, the mount's clutches and any wear. Describe collimation status honestly and say plainly whether the instrument has been dropped or serviced.
  • Carrier default liability is nowhere near a good instrument's value: declare the real amount, add signature confirmation, and keep the photographs, because optical damage claims are argued rather than conceded and 'the images are soft now' is hard to prove without a documented before-state.
