Auto Parts Span a Huge Range — Size Decides Everything
There's no single way to ship 'car parts' because the category runs from a fingertip-sized sensor to a complete engine block. A small electronic sensor or a set of brake pads fits in a padded envelope or small box and ships like any parcel; a fender or hood is an oversize freight shipment; an engine is heavy freight. So the first move with any auto part is to place it on that spectrum — small parcel, oversize parcel, or freight — because the answer dictates the carrier, the packaging, and the cost. The thriving auto-parts resale market on eBay runs on getting that classification right.
For small-to-medium parts, UPS Ground and FedEx Ground are the workhorses, and it pays to compare them by weight — their rates diverge significantly above about 30 lbs. USPS Priority Mail can be cheapest for small parts under ~10 lbs, but for heavier items the ground carriers usually beat it by 20–40%. The point is to weigh and measure the part first and match it to the right service, rather than defaulting to one carrier for everything from a spark plug to a transmission.

Packing Metal Parts: Edges, Fragility, and Weight
Auto parts bring two physical hazards to packing: sharp metal edges and serious weight. Bare metal parts have edges and points that will puncture a box from the inside, so wrap metal in bubble wrap and then kraft paper so nothing sharp can work through the carton — a part that pokes out mid-transit gets damaged, lost, or damages other packages. Because parts are dense, use sturdy boxes and don't overfill a single box past what its walls and your back can handle; two smaller well-packed boxes often beat one overloaded one.
Fragile parts need the double-box treatment. Headlights, taillights, sensors, and anything with glass or delicate housings go in a snug inner box with two inches of foam or bubble on all sides, then inside a larger outer box with more padding between the two, so an impact is absorbed before it reaches the part. Match the protection to the part: a solid cast-iron bracket just needs edge protection and a strong box, while a headlight assembly needs the full double-box suspension.

Large body panels — doors, hoods, bumpers — and heavy assemblies exceed parcel limits and ship best on LTL freight with a pallet, which both protects the part and handles the weight and size that parcel networks can't. Engines and anything over about 150 lbs are squarely freight territory (FedEx Freight, UPS Freight, or an LTL broker), palletized and strapped. Request pallet protection for big panels so they aren't handled loose; a bumper crated or palletized survives, a bumper shipped bare does not.
Value drives insurance. Auto parts are frequently expensive and sometimes hard to replace (OEM and discontinued parts especially), so declare accurate value and buy additional declared-value coverage for anything over about $100. Between the fluid rules, the freight thresholds, and the value, the disciplined workflow is: classify the part by size, drain and pack it for its fragility, choose parcel or freight accordingly, and insure it to its real worth — the same rigor that keeps auto-parts sellers profitable rather than eaten by surprise costs and damage claims.
Fluids out, edges armored: the two rules of parts shipping
Used engine and drivetrain parts carry residual fluids, and carriers treat leaking oil as contamination that can get a whole trailer's contents claimed against you. Drain everything drainable, plug openings with rags and plastic, and bag the part before boxing — the bag catches what the drain missed. For anything that held fuel, the standard is stricter: purged and fully dry, since fuel residue crosses into hazmat territory.
The second rule is mechanical: metal parts destroy their own boxes. Armor sharp edges and studs with cardboard sleeves, immobilize the part so it cannot shift (dense parts generate enormous forces in a drop), and for anything over about forty pounds, double-wall boxes and strapping tape are the floor, not the upgrade. A part that shifts in transit exits the box; the only question is when.
