How to Ship Electric Bikes & E-Scooters Safely

Electric bikes and e-scooters present a unique shipping challenge: they're heavy, bulky, and contain lithium-ion batteries that are regulated as hazardous materials. Most standard carriers have restrictions on lithium batteries above 100Wh, which covers almost all e-bikes. Understanding these rules is critical before shipping.

Shipping Tips for Electric Bikes & E-Scooters

  • Remove the lithium battery before shipping if possible — battery shipped separately may qualify for different carrier rules
  • USPS prohibits lithium batteries over 100Wh, which disqualifies most e-bike batteries from USPS service entirely
  • UPS and FedEx Ground accept lithium batteries in devices (e-bikes) with proper UN3481 labeling on the outer box
  • Partially discharge the battery to 30% charge before shipping — this is a carrier requirement and reduces fire risk
  • Disassemble handlebars and pedals, wrap in bubble wrap, and use the original manufacturer box when available

An E-Bike Is Two Shipping Problems in One

Shipping an electric bike or e-scooter means solving two problems at once: it's a big, heavy bicycle (bulky frame, wheels, handlebars) AND it carries a lithium-ion battery that's a regulated hazardous material. Either alone is manageable; together they make e-bikes one of the trickier consumer items to ship. The bicycle half follows normal bike-shipping practice — our bikes guide covers frame protection, disassembly, and boxing in depth — while the battery half is governed by lithium hazmat rules that standard shipping ignores at its peril.

The battery is the part that catches people out. Almost every e-bike battery exceeds 100Wh, which is the threshold above which lithium batteries face heavy carrier restrictions — and it's exactly why USPS is off the table (USPS prohibits lithium batteries over 100Wh entirely). The compliant lanes are UPS Ground and FedEx Ground, ground only, never air, because large lithium batteries are generally barred from air transport on fire-risk grounds.

⚠️ E-bike batteries almost all exceed 100Wh, so USPS is prohibited and air transport is generally barred. Ship ground only (UPS/FedEx) with UN3481 lithium-battery labeling. An undeclared large lithium battery on the wrong service is a fire-safety violation, not a technicality.

The Battery: Remove or Discharge, and Label UN3481

There are two compliant ways to handle the battery. The cleaner option is to remove the lithium battery and ship it separately, since a battery on its own may qualify for different (sometimes simpler) handling than the whole bike — and it lets the bike ship as a normal, non-hazmat parcel. The alternative is shipping the battery installed in the bike, which is the 'battery in equipment' case: UPS and FedEx Ground accept it with proper UN3481 lithium-battery hazmat labeling on the outer box.

Either way, charge state matters. Carriers require the battery partially discharged — to around 30% charge — before shipping, because a lower state of charge meaningfully reduces fire risk in transit. This is a rule, not a suggestion. (For a standalone lithium EV/hybrid battery, or the lead-acid vs lithium distinction generally, see our car batteries guide — the UN numbers and rules differ by battery type.) Get the charge level and the UN3481 labeling right and the hazmat side is handled; skip them and the shipment is both non-compliant and genuinely unsafe.

  • Best: remove the battery and ship it separately so the bike ships as a normal parcel.
  • Or ship installed as 'battery in equipment' with UN3481 labeling on the box.
  • Discharge the battery to ~30% charge — a carrier requirement that reduces fire risk.
  • Ground only (UPS/FedEx); USPS prohibited; no air for large lithium batteries.

Packing the Bike and What It Costs

With the battery handled, the bike itself packs like any bicycle: disassemble the handlebars and pedals (and often the front wheel), wrap components in bubble wrap, protect the frame, and use the original manufacturer box when you have it — e-bike boxes are sized and reinforced for the bike's weight. E-bikes are heavier than regular bikes (often 30–70 lbs), so the box and its padding have to handle that mass; UPS Ground and FedEx Ground accept packages up to 150 lbs, which covers essentially all e-bikes, though anything over 70 lbs in the box may draw additional handling fees.

Cost reflects the size, weight, and hazmat handling: shipping an e-bike or e-scooter typically runs roughly $60–150 depending on weight and distance, more than a comparable non-electric bike because of the battery compliance and the heft. For resale on eBay or dedicated e-bike marketplaces, build that cost into the price, and factor in the extra care the battery demands. Handle the two halves — compliant battery, well-packed bike — and an e-bike ships reliably; neglect the battery rules and it doesn't ship at all.

The battery is its own shipment

E-bike shipping is really two problems wearing one listing: a bicycle (large but routine) and a lithium battery (regulated cargo). Large-format e-bike batteries exceed the watt-hour thresholds that govern lithium shipping, which pushes them into ground-only movement with specific packaging, labeling, and carrier-program requirements — and most casual sellers should ship the bike with the battery removed, sending the battery separately through a carrier's lithium-compliant channel or having the buyer source one locally.

The frame-and-motor half then ships like any bike: pedals off, bars turned or removed, derailleur protected or removed, frame padded in a bike box. Declare honestly at booking — an undeclared large lithium battery inside a bike box is the kind of discovery that ends carrier relationships and triggers fines, not just returns.

⚠️ Check your carrier's current lithium battery rules before listing an e-bike with battery included. Watt-hour limits, quantity rules, and required markings change — and 'the last seller did it' is not a compliance program.

Shipping Electric Bikes & E-Scooters FAQ

Can I ship an e-bike with the battery installed?
Via UPS or FedEx Ground, yes — with proper UN3481 hazmat labeling on the box and battery charge at 30% or less. USPS prohibits batteries over 100Wh. Air shipping is generally not permitted for large lithium batteries.
How do I ship an e-scooter?
Remove or discharge the battery to 30%, disassemble folding parts, wrap in bubble wrap, box it up, and apply UN3481 lithium battery hazmat labels. Ship via UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. Expect to pay $60-$150 depending on weight and distance.
What's the weight limit for shipping an e-bike?
UPS Ground and FedEx Ground both accept packages up to 150 lbs. Most e-bikes fall under this. However, if the bike in its box exceeds 70 lbs, expect additional handling fees.
