A Car Battery Is Hazmat — Two Reasons at Once
A standard car battery is a regulated hazardous material for two overlapping reasons: it holds sulfuric acid (corrosive) and lead (toxic), and it stores energy that can short and spark. That combination puts wet-cell lead-acid batteries under DOT hazmat rules as a Class 8 Corrosive material (UN2794), and it takes USPS off the table entirely — the Postal Service does not accept wet-cell lead-acid batteries under any service. The compliant path is UPS Ground or FedEx Ground with proper hazmat packaging and labeling; air shipping is heavily restricted.
This is a genuine compliance obligation, not a suggestion, and the consequences of ignoring it are real: carriers can refuse the package or fine you, and if the battery leaks or causes an incident in transit, you can be liable for cleanup costs and legal penalties under DOT regulations. So car-battery shipping is one of those cases — like fragrance or alcohol — where following the rules exactly is the whole job, and the physical packing exists to satisfy them.

Compliant Packing: Upright, Contained, Labeled
The packaging is engineered to keep the acid where it belongs even if the battery is dropped or tipped. Ship the battery upright, in the original manufacturer packaging or a rigid, acid-resistant container, and surround it with absorbent material — vermiculite or absorbent pads — that would soak up any acid leak rather than letting it escape the box. Protect the terminals so they can't short against anything (a real spark/fire risk), and immobilize the heavy battery so it can't shift, since a 30–50 lb battery sliding in a box can crack a case.
Then label it correctly, which is a legal requirement, not a courtesy: a Class 8 Corrosive label and a UN2794 marking on the outer box, applied as the carrier's hazmat program requires. Both UPS and FedEx require the battery in appropriate packaging with this labeling, and shipping through a hazmat-certified process is what keeps the shipment legal. Every element — upright, acid-resistant container, absorbent, protected terminals, correct labels — maps directly to a hazmat rule.

Lead-Acid vs Lithium: Different Rules Entirely
Not all car batteries are the same hazmat class, and the distinction matters. The traditional wet-cell lead-acid battery is the Class 8 Corrosive (UN2794) case described above. Lithium-ion batteries — from electric vehicles and hybrids — fall under a different regime entirely: UN3480 (batteries shipped alone) or UN3481 (batteries in equipment), with their own packaging, labeling, documentation, and often per-shipment quantity limits. You cannot apply lead-acid rules to a lithium pack or vice versa; each has its own UN number and requirements.

Terminal protection: the rule that decides acceptance
Whatever else your battery packaging gets right, exposed terminals get the shipment refused or worse — a shorted battery in a parcel network is a fire, not a delay. The standard: cap or tape both terminals with non-conductive material (the original plastic caps or heavy electrical tape), position the battery upright, and make sure nothing metallic can migrate to the posts inside the box. Carriers that accept batteries at all check terminal protection first.
For sealed AGM and gel batteries, honesty about the battery type matters at booking — non-spillable designations exist precisely so compliant batteries can move ground legally. Keep the manufacturer's spec sheet handy; 'non-spillable' printed on the case plus the spec sheet answers the acceptance question at any counter.
⚠️ Never ship a wet-cell battery in ordinary parcel packaging or by air. Ground services with hazmat compliance are the only lane, and air induction of an undeclared battery is a federal-violation-grade mistake, not a shipping tip.
