Optical Alignment: The Damage You Can't See
Cameras and lenses fail differently from other electronics, and the difference explains every packing rule that follows. A lens is a stack of glass elements held in precise alignment by a barrel and internal mounts; a camera body holds a sensor at an exact distance and angle from the mount flange. A shock that leaves no external mark — no dent, no crack, nothing a buyer would photograph — can nudge that alignment enough to produce soft corners, focus that never quite lands, or an image that's sharp on one side and mushy on the other. The gear looks perfect and no longer performs, which is the worst possible outcome for a seller, because the dispute begins with 'it arrived in flawless condition, but…'
So the goal isn't merely to prevent breakage; it's to prevent shock transmission. That's why double-boxing is the non-negotiable standard in the camera trade rather than a premium option: an inner box holds the gear immobilized, and the outer box with a cushioning layer between them absorbs the impact energy before it reaches the inner box at all. A single box, however well-padded, still transmits a hard drop straight through to the equipment. Suspension, not just padding, is the principle — the same reason our electronics guide insists on immobilization, applied to instruments where the tolerances are measured in fractions of a millimeter.
Caps, Static, and Preparing the Gear Itself
Preparation happens before any wrapping. Cap both ends of every lens — front cap and rear cap — because an exposed rear element is the most vulnerable and most expensive glass surface on the object, and a mounted body cap protects the camera's mirror box, shutter, and sensor chamber from anything that gets inside the box. Detach the lens from the body: a lens left mounted turns the camera into a lever, with all the transit forces concentrated on the mount and the body's lens-release mechanism. Ship them separately packed, in the same box, each fully protected.
Static is the second preparation concern and the one most sellers skip. Standard bubble wrap can generate static charge as it's handled and unwrapped, and a discharge into an exposed sensor or the camera's electronics is real damage with no visible cause. Anti-static wrap or an anti-static bag around the body eliminates the risk for pennies. Then immobilize: the gear should not shift at all when the sealed box is gently shaken — if you can hear or feel movement, add fill, because every millimeter of travel is energy the equipment will absorb on impact.
⚠️ Never ship a lens mounted on a camera body. In transit the lens acts as a lever on the mount, and a drop that a separately-packed body would shrug off can bend the mount, crack the lens flange, or damage the mirror box. Body cap on, lens caps on, packed separately.
Camera Batteries and the Lithium Rules
Camera gear brings lithium-ion batteries into the shipment, and the rules turn on one distinction: is the battery installed in the equipment, or loose? Batteries installed in a device are the straightforward case and ride with the camera under ordinary conditions. Spare or loose lithium batteries are restricted — they must move by ground/surface transport rather than air, need their terminals protected against short circuit (tape over the contacts, or keep each in its own case or bag), and are subject to quantity and packaging conditions. Damaged, swollen, or recalled batteries are not shippable as ordinary parcels at all.
The practical rule the used-camera trade follows: remove the battery from the body, tape its terminals, bag it individually, and choose a ground service so the shipment is compliant by construction. It also protects the camera — a battery left installed can leak or, in a hot trailer, vent. Declare the shipment honestly; undeclared lithium batteries in the air network are a genuine safety issue, not a paperwork technicality, and it's the one part of camera shipping where the consequences extend beyond your own package.
Selling Gear: Declared Value, Photos, and the Used-Camera Market
The used camera market — MPB, KEH, eBay, and the enthusiast forums — trades in equipment where a single lens can outvalue everything else in the mail sack, and carriers' default liability (roughly $100) is a rounding error against a professional body or a fast prime. Declare the real value; the incremental cost is small and the exposure without it is total. Then build the evidence file, because optical damage claims are argued, not conceded. Photograph serial numbers, the front and rear elements under light (which shows fungus, scratches, and haze), the sensor if the body's shutter can be safely opened, the shutter count where available, and the condition of the mount. Photograph the packed box before sealing. Add signature confirmation — small high-value packages are theft magnets. And write the listing honestly: the used-gear community is knowledgeable, condition-obsessed, and unforgiving of surprises, which cuts both ways — sellers who document meticulously build the reputations that let them sell the next body sight-unseen.
