How to Ship Packages from Home (No Post Office Needed)
Skip the line. Print labels, schedule pickups, and ship from your front door.
You do not need to visit the post office to ship a package. Every major carrier offers ways to ship directly from your home — whether that means scheduling a free pickup, dropping packages at a nearby location, or having your regular mail carrier take them. Here's how to do it with each carrier.
USPS: Free Carrier Pickup
USPS offers free Package Pickup for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and international packages. Here's how:
- Print your shipping label at home (you'll need a printer — see our Rollo printer setup guide)
- Schedule a pickup at usps.com/pickup or through the USPS app
- Leave packages in a visible, accessible spot (porch, mailbox area, front desk)
- Your regular mail carrier picks them up during their normal route
Pickups are completely free and you can schedule them as early as the next business day. You can also hand packages to your mail carrier when they deliver your mail.
UPS: Scheduled Pickups and Drop-Off Points
UPS offers several options for shipping without visiting a UPS Store:
- UPS Daily Pickup: For regular shippers, UPS offers daily pickup service at your address for a weekly fee (~$16/week).
- UPS On-Call Pickup: Schedule a one-time pickup for ~$7. Available same-day or next-day.
- UPS Access Points: Drop off pre-labeled packages at thousands of local businesses, pharmacies, and grocery stores that serve as UPS drop-off points. No line, no waiting.
- UPS Drop Boxes: For smaller packages, use the brown UPS drop boxes found in many commercial areas.
FedEx: Drop-Off Locations and Pickup Options
FedEx has an extensive drop-off network:
- FedEx Drop-Off Locations: Walgreens, Dollar General, and many other retail locations accept FedEx packages. Over 60,000 locations nationwide.
- FedEx Pickup: Schedule one-time or recurring pickups through fedex.com. Fees vary by frequency.
- FedEx Drop Boxes: Purple drop boxes are available in many commercial and residential areas for pre-labeled packages.
What You Need to Ship from Home
- A printer: A thermal label printer is ideal for 4x6 labels, but any inkjet or laser printer works with letter-format labels.
- A postal scale: Digital postal scales cost $15–$30 and ensure you weigh packages accurately to avoid surcharges.
- Packaging materials: Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper. USPS Priority Mail boxes are free.
- A label maker: Use ShippingLabel to create professional labels for any carrier in seconds.
