When to worry
DHL Express: 5+ business days with no movement. DHL eCommerce: 21+ days with no new scan

What It Means

"In transit" means the DHL package is moving through the carrier's network between facilities. DHL scans packages at gateway hubs, sort centers, and clearance facilities — but there are large gaps between scans during truck or air transport. An 'in transit' status often means the package is physically on a vehicle or aircraft and won't receive another scan until it arrives at the next processing point.

For DHL Express international shipments, 'in transit' typically means the package has left the origin country's gateway hub and is on an aircraft to the destination country. For DHL eCommerce and DHL Parcel, it means the package is in domestic surface transport between sorting centers.

The duration of 'in transit' depends heavily on origin-destination distance and service level: DHL Express can cross an ocean in 24–48 hours; DHL eCommerce international shipments may show 'in transit' for 7–21 days for long-haul routes.

What To Do Next

  • 1Check the estimated delivery date on your DHL tracking page — if it's still in the future, no action is needed
  • 2Note which facility last scanned the package and its destination — this helps estimate remaining transit time
  • 3For DHL Express stuck more than 5 business days with no scan, contact DHL's customer service with your tracking number
  • 4If the package shows as in transit to a customs facility, it may be in customs clearance — allow extra time
  • 5For DHL eCommerce shipments, expect slower tracking updates than Express — these are economy international services
