Wine Shippers: The One Piece of Packaging That Actually Matters
A wine bottle is a heavy glass cylinder with a fragile neck and a punt that concentrates impact — exactly the shape that breaks in an ordinary box. The fix is a purpose-built wine shipper: an insert molded to cradle each bottle, sized so the neck and base are both supported and no glass touches glass. Get the shipper right and the outer box barely matters; get it wrong and no amount of bubble wrap saves you, because loose bottles in a big box simply build up momentum and shatter against each other.
There are three insert families worth knowing. Molded pulp (fiber) shippers are the industry default — recyclable, sturdy, and accepted by carrier alcohol programs; they come in 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12-bottle configurations. Expanded polystyrene (EPS foam) shippers offer slightly more shock absorption and a bit of thermal buffering, at the cost of being bulkier and less green. Inflatable air-cell sleeves are the newest option — a plastic bladder you inflate around each bottle — light and compact but more finicky to seal. Whichever you choose, the rule is the same: one bottle, one molded cavity, inside a rigid outer box rated for the packed weight.

Temperature Is the Silent Killer — Ship With the Weather
Breakage is the obvious risk; heat is the quiet one. Wine 'cooks' when it sits in a hot delivery truck or on a summer porch — sustained exposure above roughly 85°F pushes the cork, dulls the fruit, and can ruin a bottle without a single crack in the glass. Cold is the mirror problem: below freezing, wine expands, pushes the cork out, or cracks the bottle. Because ground shipping is the only speed most wine travels (it is heavy and rarely worth air freight), your bottle can spend two to five days inside whatever temperature the route throws at it.
The professional answer is to ship with the calendar, not against it. Wineries and serious sellers pause or restrict shipping during peak summer and deep winter, or upgrade to expedited service and add a thermal liner or gel pack when a heat wave can't be avoided. 'Wine weather' — spring and fall — is when most bottles move for a reason. If you must ship into a hot destination, shorten the clock: choose the fastest ground zone you can, avoid tendering on a Thursday or Friday (so the box doesn't bake in a weekend hub), and consider holding for Monday pickup with a temperature-controlled option.
- Summer / heat waves: expedite, add an insulated liner + gel pack, and ship early in the week so the box never sits over a weekend.
- Winter / freezing routes: same insulation logic in reverse — the liner buffers cold as well as heat.
- Spring and fall: the natural shipping window; standard ground is usually fine.
- Any season: check the destination's forecast, not just your own — the bottle experiences the route, not your loading dock.
The Weight-and-Cost Math Nobody Explains
A standard 750ml bottle weighs about 2.5–3 lbs on its own; packed in a molded shipper inside a box, budget 3–6 lbs per bottle depending on the insert. That has real consequences for what you pay. A single-bottle shipment is almost always the worst value per bottle, because the base carrier rate and the adult-signature surcharge get spread across one unit. Economics improve sharply as bottle count rises: a 6-pack or 12-pack shipper carries far more wine per dollar of base rate and signature fee, which is why clubs and wineries push case quantities.
Dimensional weight rarely bites wine — bottles are dense, so actual weight almost always governs — but the outer box still matters. Use a box matched to the shipper insert; an oversized carton adds nothing but rattle room and, on multi-bottle configs, can tip you into a higher dim bracket. And remember the adult-signature requirement is per shipment: consolidating a customer's bottles into one compliant box beats splitting them across several labels, both on postage and on the number of signature fees you pay.

Cork Orientation, Leakage, and the Pro Details
Two questions divide wine shippers: which way does the bottle ride, and how do you stop a leak from becoming a claim. For short transit in a molded shipper, upright is the safe default — it keeps pressure off the cork and keeps any weep away from the capsule. The 'store it on its side' advice from cellars is about months of aging, not days of shipping, and doesn't apply to a box in transit. What matters far more than orientation is that each bottle is locked in its own cavity so it cannot move.
Plan for the possibility of a weep even when nothing breaks. A thin poly sleeve or bag around each bottle contains any seepage so a single loose cork doesn't stain the shipper and trigger a 'damaged' report on an otherwise fine order. Reinforce the outer box seams with the H-taping method, orient and duplicate the address and any 'this side up' and alcohol markings on the top face, and — because the box is heavy and clearly a beverage shipper — expect it to be handled as freight, not as a gift. Pack for the drop it will get, not the drop you hope for.
