Chocolate Melts at Room Temperature — That Changes Everything
Chocolate is the most heat-sensitive common shipment there is, because it melts at just 86–90°F — barely above a warm room, and well below the interior temperature of a parcel truck on any mild-to-hot day. That single fact is what separates chocolate from other 'temperature-sensitive' items. A candle's wax holds until 115–145°F; chocolate is already softening at temperatures a person finds comfortable. It doesn't take a heat wave to ruin a box of truffles — it takes an ordinary spring afternoon in a delivery van.
Because the melt threshold is so low, chocolate shipping is essentially always a temperature problem and only incidentally a packaging one. On a hot day without insulation, chocolate can begin melting in as little as two to four hours. That means you can't rely on the weather being kind or the transit being quick — you plan every warm-season shipment as if the box will get hot, because it will.

Shipping chocolate through warm months means building a small cold chain around it. Three pieces do the work: an insulated liner (a foam box liner or reflective bubble liner) inside the shipping box to buffer external heat, a cold gel pack sized to the shipment (roughly 4–6 oz for a small box, 12+ oz for larger) to actively hold the interior temperature down, and a fast service — 2-day air such as UPS 2nd Day Air or USPS Priority Mail — to limit how long the box is exposed at all. Ship Monday through Wednesday so nothing sits in a facility over a hot weekend.
Assembly details matter. Seal the chocolate in a plastic bag before it goes inside the insulated liner, so condensation from the gel pack can't wet the product or its packaging — a melted-looking box from moisture is nearly as bad as a truly melted one. Position the gel pack to cool the air around the chocolate rather than pressed directly against it. In cool months you can relax all of this and ship standard, but the moment ambient temperatures climb, the liner-plus-gel-pack-plus-speed kit is the price of a chocolate arriving intact.

Bloomed chocolate is safe to eat and usually tastes fine, but it looks off, and for a gift box or an artisan brand, appearance is much of the value. A customer who opens a hazy, streaked box of truffles reads it as 'ruined' even if it isn't.
That's why temperature control for chocolate is about consistency, not just staying under the melt point — a bar that heats and cools repeatedly can bloom without ever fully liquefying. The same insulated, gel-packed, fast-shipped approach that prevents melting also minimizes the temperature swings that cause bloom. Milk and white chocolate are more sensitive than dark on both counts, so treat them as the harder case when deciding how much cold-chain protection a shipment needs.
The Artisan Chocolate Seller's Reality
For Etsy chocolatiers and small confectioners, shipping is a seasonal tightrope. Demand often peaks in warm-weather gifting occasions (and around holidays), exactly when melt risk is highest, so successful sellers bake the cost of insulation and expedited air into their pricing rather than absorbing surprise reships. Many restrict or add a surcharge for hot-climate destinations in peak summer, and some pause shipping certain products entirely during heat waves — an honest 'we don't ship this in July' beats a melted-truffle refund and a bad review.
Set expectations and cover the last mile. Tell customers their chocolate ships with cold packs and should be refrigerated on arrival, and time delivery so the box isn't sitting on a hot porch for hours. The chocolate that survives the truck can still melt in the final stretch, so the customer is part of the cold chain too. Handle the heat deliberately — right service, real insulation, smart timing, clear communication — and chocolate ships beautifully; improvise, and summer turns your margins into a puddle.
