Ceramics and pottery are among the most fragile items you can ship — a single hard impact can shatter a piece that took days to make. Whether you're shipping handmade mugs from Etsy or a vintage porcelain vase, the 2-2-2 rule (2 inches of foam, 2 inches between pieces, double-boxing) is your best protection.

Shipping Tips for Ceramics & Pottery

Double-box all ceramic pieces: wrap in foam, pack in inner box, place inner box in outer box with padding
Use foam wrap (not bubble wrap alone) for ceramics — bubbles can leave pressure marks on delicate surfaces
Fill hollow pieces (mugs, bowls, vases) with crumpled paper or foam before wrapping to prevent implosion
Each piece needs its own inner wrap — never let two ceramic pieces touch each other even if both are wrapped
UPS and FedEx Ground have better fragile item handling records than USPS for breakable items
