How to Intercept a UPS Package (Delivery Intercept)
UPS Delivery Intercept lets you stop a package in transit, redirect it to a new address, return it to sender, or reroute it to a UPS Access Point for pickup — all for a fee of approximately $17 per package. Available for most UPS Ground and Express shipments. UPS My Choice members (Premium plan) can sometimes redirect to nearby Access Points for free. Submit the intercept request as early as possible — once UPS has loaded the package onto the delivery truck, intercept is no longer possible.
Step-by-step
- 1
Log into UPS My Choice or ups.com
Go to ups.com/mychoice. If you don't have a My Choice account, sign up for free. Enter the tracking number of the package you want to intercept. You must be the shipper or the recipient to request an intercept.
- 2
Verify intercept eligibility
The package must be in the UPS network but not yet delivered. UPS will display whether Delivery Intercept is available when you track the package. If 'Manage Delivery' options appear in tracking, intercept is possible.
- 3
Choose your intercept option
Reschedule Delivery: change the delivery date. Deliver to Another Address: redirect to a new address (~$17 fee). Hold at UPS Location: send to a UPS Customer Center or Access Point near the recipient. Return to Sender: reverse the shipment back to the origin.
- 4
Pay the intercept fee
UPS charges ~$17 for Delivery Intercept. UPS My Choice Premium members can redirect to a nearby UPS Access Point for free (standard My Choice plan is free; Premium has a monthly fee for enhanced services).
- 5
Track the intercept status
After submitting, monitor the tracking number. Successful intercepts show updated delivery information within a few hours. If UPS cannot intercept (package already out for delivery), you'll see a notification and the original delivery will proceed.
Good to know
- •UPS Access Point redirect is one of the most useful My Choice features — instead of a failed delivery attempt, the package goes to a nearby store for secure pickup at your convenience.
- •Intercept requests for packages already on the delivery vehicle (status: 'Out for Delivery') are almost always unsuccessful.
- •For business accounts, UPS Quantum View Manage allows proactive intercept management across entire shipment batches.
