Why Warehouses Cluster in Reno: The West's Fulfillment Magnet
Reno has quietly become one of the most important distribution points on the West Coast, and the reasons are concrete. Nevada has no state income tax, and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center just east of the city has drawn enormous fulfillment and manufacturing investment, including Tesla's Gigafactory. But the shipping reason sellers actually locate here is speed to California: from Reno, ground packages often reach Northern California next day and much of the West within two, without paying California's warehouse costs or taxes. For an ecommerce or FBA operation serving the western US, that combination is hard to beat.
If you are choosing where to stage inventory for a western customer base, Reno is a textbook answer — fast, cheap ground into the huge California market from a lower-cost, business-friendly base just over the state line. The zone map confirms it: Zone 1 to 2 to the West Coast, with the East Coast out at Zone 6 to 7, so lean western and rate-shop the long hauls.

Sierra Winters: The I-80 Donner Pass Variable
Reno sits at the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada, and the main freight lane west — I-80 over Donner Pass toward Sacramento and the Bay Area — climbs through some of the snowiest terrain in the country. In winter, Donner Pass restricts to chains or closes outright during storms, and when it does, westbound ground shipments can stall for a day or more. It is the one seasonal asterisk on Reno's otherwise excellent western reach.
Plan for it the way local shippers do: in winter, add buffer to westbound ground estimates during active storms, and for time-critical coast-bound orders, air service flies over the weather the pass cannot. Reno's ski and outdoor-gear trade means winter is also peak season for a lot of local sellers, so the timing of the pass risk and the demand surge unfortunately overlap — plan accordingly.
