How to Ship to Honduras from the US

You can ship to Honduras from the US with USPS, with an express courier such as DHL, FedEx or UPS, or with a cargo forwarder. Many Honduran families in the US send gifts and household goods home. Small parcels go cheapest by USPS. Big boxes usually go by courier or cargo forwarder, because USPS stops at 44 lb.

Under the CAFTA-DR trade deal, many US-made goods pay no import duty. But the recipient usually pays Honduran sales tax (ISV), which is 15% on most goods. Below are USPS's real prices, the tax rules, the items USPS won't carry and how to address the parcel.

Duty and Sales Tax: What the Recipient Pays

Honduras is part of CAFTA-DR, the trade deal with the US. The US government's trade guide lists these charges:

Import duty: 0% for many US-made goods under CAFTA-DR, including qualifying clothing and most farm goods. Goods made elsewhere can still pay duty.
Sales tax (ISV): 15% on most goods, and 18% on alcohol and tobacco.
Selective consumption tax: charged on some non-essential goods.
The recipient pays before the parcel is released. A courier may add a fee for clearing customs.

What USPS Won't Carry to Honduras

USPS's country rules for Honduras ban currency, coins and other valuables, firearms and war material, infectious biological substances and radioactive materials.

Used clothing has its own rule. USPS says it needs a disinfection certificate, and the wrapper must be marked to show it. Without one, pack only new clothes with tags, or use a cargo forwarder that knows the Honduran rules. Also note that USPS offers no insurance on Priority Mail International to Honduras.

How to Address a Package to Honduras

Many Honduran addresses use a colonia (neighborhood) and a landmark instead of a street number. Write the address in this order:

Recipient's full name and phone number.
Street and house number, if any. Otherwise a landmark, such as 'frente a la iglesia'.
Colonia or neighborhood.
City and department, for example San Pedro Sula, Cortés.
HONDURAS.
