The Battery Comes Out First
Hobby-grade RC cars are lithium-battery products, and the battery is both the biggest compliance question and one of the biggest hazards in the box. Most performance RC runs on lithium-polymer (LiPo) packs — the same high-energy-density cells our drones guide treats with respect — and they follow the lithium rules: installed-in-device is the simpler case, while loose or spare packs need terminal protection, individual bagging, watt-hour awareness, and generally ground service. A damaged, puffed, or crash-swollen LiPo should never ship at all; it's a failing cell and a genuine fire risk, and it belongs at a battery-recycling point, not in a parcel.
Best practice for shipping an RC car is to remove the battery from the model and pack it protected and separate — terminals taped, pack bagged, ideally in a LiPo-safe bag — rather than leaving it installed and connected where it could be jostled or short. Ship LiPos at storage charge, not full. If a model uses a NiMH pack it's more forgiving, but the loose-cell handling still applies. Get the battery right first, because it's the part that turns an ordinary parcel into a regulated (and potentially dangerous) one.
⚠️ Remove the LiPo pack, tape its terminals, bag it, and ship it at storage charge — never a puffed or crash-damaged pack. A short-circuited or failing lithium battery in a parcel is a real fire hazard, which is exactly what the ground-only, terminal-protected rules exist to prevent.
An Assembled Model of Fragile, Protruding Parts
Beyond the battery, an RC car is a built model — a chassis hung with suspension arms, shock towers, a delicate body shell (lexan or hard plastic), wing, antenna, and steering linkages, all of which protrude and concentrate force. Dropped in a box loose, those are the parts that snap: suspension arms crack, the body shell scuffs or cracks, the antenna bends, and small linkages shear. The packing job is to immobilize the chassis and protect the protrusions specifically.
The practical method: remove or lower the body shell and wrap it separately (a scratched or cracked shell is a common, avoidable loss), retract or remove the antenna, and nest the chassis in foam or shaped padding so the suspension and wheels don't bear the load. Fill the voids so nothing shifts, and double-box valuable or brushless race models. The original box with its molded packaging, if you have it, is engineered for exactly this and is the best container. Small parts, tools, and spare pinions that come with the car get bagged separately so they can't rattle around damaging the model or vanishing into the fill.
Hobby-Grade vs Toy-Grade, Scale, and Weight
RC spans a huge range, and where a model sits on it changes the shipment. Toy-grade RC cars are cheap, sealed, and robust — they ship like any boxed toy. Hobby-grade models are where the value, the fragility, and the batteries concentrate: brushless motors, expensive electronics (ESC, receiver, servos), and race-tuned suspension, all of which reward the careful treatment above. Know which you're shipping, because collector and race buyers of hobby-grade models expect collector-grade packing.
Scale drives weight and cost. Small 1/18 and 1/10 models ship in ordinary parcel bands, but large-scale 1/5 and 1/6 gas and electric models are genuinely heavy and oversized — the tips are right that ground service is the answer there, and dimensional weight and oversize surcharges come into play, so measure as well as weigh and quote before listing. Gas and nitro models add one more rule that mirrors our power-tools and camping-gear guides: drain the fuel and let the engine air out, because carriers refuse packages that smell of gasoline or nitro fuel. Empty the tank, pull the battery, protect the shell, and match the service to the scale.
Selling RC: Electronics, Crash History, and Completeness
The used-RC market is knowledgeable and suspicious for good reason: a crashed model can look fine and run badly, and the electronics are where hidden problems hide. Disclose crash history and repairs honestly, note the condition of the electronics (motor, ESC, servos, receiver), and describe wear on the drivetrain and suspension — a buyer paying for a brushless race truck wants to know it hasn't been rolled a hundred times. Photograph the chassis, the electronics, and the body shell from multiple angles, and mention battery health and cycle count on any included packs.
Completeness and compatibility matter too. State exactly what's included — does it come with the battery, charger, transmitter, and body shell, or is it a roller? — because those are large value differences, and a model listed as ready-to-run that arrives missing its transmitter is a dispute. Include the specific charger and cables the buyer needs. Insure to real value (hobby-grade RC gets expensive), pull and protect the battery, immobilize the model and its protrusions, and tell the truth about the crashes: that's the full method for shipping something a buyer intends to drive hard.
