The Opposite of a Houseplant: Ship Them Dry
Cactus and succulents flip the live-plant shipping rules on their head. Our general plants guide is largely about keeping tender plants moist and racing the clock before they dehydrate — but cactus and succulents are desert plants built to store water and survive drought, which makes them the easiest live plants to mail and means the usual instinct is exactly wrong. You ship them dry. A succulent that arrives having gone a week or two without water is completely fine; a succulent shipped damp, wrapped in wet moss like a fern, is a succulent that rots.
So the method inverts. Where a tender plant travels with damp roots sealed to hold humidity, a cactus or succulent travels bare-root and dry: knock the soil off the roots (dry soil is lighter, cleaner, and sidesteps soil-transport rules), let any cuttings callus, wrap the plant so it's immobilized but the roots and body stay dry, and pack it in a breathable box. The plant's own stored water carries it through transit. This drought tolerance is precisely why cactus and succulents dominate the online-plant market — they forgive the days in a dark box that would kill a fussier plant.

Rot Is the Enemy, Not Dehydration
Because these plants store water, the failure mode isn't drying out — it's rot and physical damage. Excess moisture in a warm, dark box is a rot factory for a succulent, so beyond shipping dry, avoid sealing them in anything that traps humidity; a breathable package that lets the plant stay dry is better than an airtight one. If the plant was watered recently before you dug it up, let it dry out before shipping rather than boxing a moist rootball. Dry, breathable, immobilized — that's the anti-rot recipe.
Physical protection is the other half. Succulent leaves and cactus pads are often brittle and snap or bruise under pressure, and a bruised succulent leaf can rot at the injury, so the plant needs to be immobilized so nothing presses on or jostles the body. Cactus spines are their own challenge: they protect the plant but also puncture packaging and the hands of whoever packs and unpacks — so wrap spiny cacti carefully (newspaper collars and careful handling), both to protect the person and to keep spines from being broken off. Cushion the plant so it can't move, protect brittle leaves and pads, and manage the spines: the plant's water reserves handle the rest.
Temperature: Cold Is the Real Killer
For desert plants, heat is largely a non-issue — they're built for it — but cold is genuinely dangerous. Most cactus and succulents are frost-sensitive, and a plant that freezes in transit turns to mush; a single night below freezing in an unheated truck or on a cold porch can kill an otherwise bulletproof succulent. So the temperature discipline for these plants is winter-focused: use a heat pack (positioned to warm the air, not press on the plant) and insulation for shipments through cold weather, and lean on the ship-early-in-the-week timing so the plant isn't sitting in a cold facility over a weekend.
This makes the seasonal calendar the main scheduling concern. Summer shipping is usually easy — these plants tolerate heat well — while winter shipping to or through cold regions needs heat packs, insulation, and sometimes a pause during hard freezes. It's the mirror image of many other perishables, where heat is the enemy; for cactus and succulents, cold is the thing to plan around. Watch the destination's forecast, not just your own, because a plant leaving a warm origin can still freeze crossing a cold region or landing on a frozen doorstep.
Agricultural Rules, the Collector Market, and Selling
Cactus and succulents are live plants, so they cross the same regulatory line our plants guide describes: USDA APHIS and state agriculture departments restrict plant movement to control pests and disease, and some states (California, Florida, Hawaii, and others) have additional inspection or import requirements, with certain species needing phytosanitary certificates. Shipping bare-root and soil-free — which you're doing anyway for these plants — helpfully sidesteps soil-transport restrictions. Some cactus species are also protected under CITES (particularly wild-collected specimens), so rare and imported cacti can carry serious legal requirements; know the status of what you're shipping. Check the destination's rules before listing to that state, and international shipping is a permit-heavy undertaking most casual sellers decline.
There's a passionate collector market here — rare, variegated, and unusual succulents and cacti trade at surprising prices, and hobbyists know exactly what they're buying. Describe the species and cultivar accurately, note the plant's size and whether it's an offset, cutting, or established plant, and disclose any damage, etiolation, or pest issues honestly. Photograph the actual plant. Ship it dry and bare-root, protect the brittle parts and manage the spines, heat-pack it in winter, respect the agricultural rules, and describe it precisely — that's the whole method for the rare live plant that's genuinely easy to mail precisely because it was built to survive the desert.
