FedEx One Rate: Complete Guide

ShippingLabel Editorial Team··5 min read

FedEx One Rate is a flat-rate shipping program that lets you pay a single price for eligible FedEx Express shipments regardless of weight — as long as the package fits in approved FedEx packaging and stays under 50 lb. It competes directly with USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate and is a strong option for dense, heavy items shipping short to medium distances.

Unlike USPS Flat Rate, FedEx One Rate prices vary by service level (Overnight, 2Day, Express Saver) and package size, but weight is removed as a variable up to 50 lb. If your product consistently pushes the weight limit but fits in the box, One Rate can generate significant savings over standard dimensional or zone-based FedEx pricing.

Eligible FedEx One Rate Packaging

FedEx One Rate only works with official FedEx packaging — you cannot use your own boxes. FedEx provides these boxes at no charge at their retail locations or you can order them online through your FedEx account. The available sizes range from small envelopes to large boxes, covering most small-to-medium ecommerce parcels.

The packaging must not be altered, reinforced, or modified. If a box is overpacked to the point it bulges or is taped in ways that change its dimensions, FedEx may reclassify the shipment and bill the difference.

  • FedEx One Rate Envelope (up to 0.5 lb, documents only)
  • FedEx One Rate Pak (flexible envelope, up to 50 lb)
  • FedEx One Rate Small Box: 10.875" x 1.5" x 12.375"
  • FedEx One Rate Medium Box: 11.5" x 2.375" x 13.25"
  • FedEx One Rate Large Box: 12.375" x 3" x 17.5"
  • FedEx One Rate Extra Large Box: 11.875" x 10.75" x 11"

Service Levels and Pricing

FedEx One Rate is available across FedEx Priority Overnight, FedEx 2Day, and FedEx Express Saver. Priority Overnight delivers by 10:30 AM or noon the next business day. 2Day delivers by 4:30 PM in two business days. Express Saver delivers by 4:30 PM in three business days.

The flat price is set per package size per service level. Actual rates depend on whether you ship at retail or through a FedEx account. Account holders typically pay 20–30% less than retail One Rate prices. Surcharges for residential delivery, fuel, and remote areas still apply on top of the One Rate base price.

ℹ️ Fuel surcharges are applied on top of One Rate prices and fluctuate weekly. Always check the FedEx rate tools with your account number to get the true all-in cost before comparing to alternatives.

When FedEx One Rate Saves You Money

One Rate is most advantageous when you're shipping dense, heavy items that fit in a small or medium box. If a product weighs 12 lb but fits in a Medium One Rate Box, you pay the flat price instead of a weight-based rate that climbs with every pound. The break-even weight — where One Rate beats zone-based FedEx Express — varies by zone, but is often around 4–7 lb for medium boxes.

One Rate is typically not the best choice for very light items (under 2 lb) because standard FedEx Express pricing for lightweight packages can be competitive, and for packages going only 1–2 zones because the rate advantage shrinks when the base zone rate is already low.

  1. Weigh a representative sample of the items you ship most frequently
  2. Check what zone(s) most of your shipments go to (your FedEx invoice shows zone distribution)
  3. Get quotes for both FedEx One Rate and standard FedEx Express at those weights and zones
  4. Account for dimensional weight — if your box is mostly air, standard rates may already be low
  5. Run the comparison for each service level (Overnight, 2Day, Saver) separately

Restrictions and What One Rate Does Not Cover

FedEx One Rate is only for domestic US shipments within the 48 contiguous states. Alaska and Hawaii are excluded. International shipments, even to Canada or Mexico, do not qualify for One Rate pricing.

Hazardous materials, alcohol, and items requiring special handling are excluded from One Rate, even if they would otherwise fit in the approved packaging. Declared value above $100 requires additional charges, so high-value items should also carry additional insurance separate from the One Rate program.

⚠️ One Rate packages that exceed 50 lb will be re-rated at standard FedEx Express rates for the actual weight, which can be significantly higher than what you budgeted. Always verify weight before sealing the box.
