Candles Fail Two Ways: Melted or Smashed
A jarred candle is a uniquely awkward shipment because it combines two opposite vulnerabilities in one object. It's temperature-sensitive — the wax literally liquefies in a hot truck — and it's heavy, dense glass that hits hard and shatters when a box is dropped. Solve only one and you still lose the order: a perfectly insulated candle in a flimsy mailer arrives cracked, and a well-boxed candle with no heat planning arrives as a puddle. Every packing choice has to serve both problems at once.
That dual nature is what separates candle shipping from both fragile goods (which only need cushioning) and perishables (which only need temperature control). Candles need cushioning AND a temperature strategy, and the temperature strategy is specifically about the wax's melt point, not food safety. Get the mental model right — melt and smash are the two enemies — and the rest of the approach follows.

Wax Melt Points and the Summer Shipping Window
The temperature strategy starts with knowing your wax. Soy wax softens and melts at roughly 115–135°F, paraffin is higher at around 145°F, and blends and coconut/beeswax vary — but here's the catch: the inside of a delivery truck or a package left in summer sun can easily exceed all of those. That means soy candles, the Etsy default, are the most heat-vulnerable, and any candle shipped into the Southwest or Southeast in mid-summer is genuinely at risk. A candle doesn't have to reach an oven temperature to fail; it just has to cross its wax's melt point for a while.
So ship candles with the calendar and the map, the way wineries ship wine. In cold and mild months you can ship candles by standard ground with no special measures. In summer, or to consistently hot destinations, shorten the heat exposure: use faster 2-day service to cut truck time, add an ice pack in a separate insulated pouch (never touching the glass directly), and avoid tendering before a weekend when the box would bake in an un-air-conditioned facility. When a heat wave is unavoidable, expediting is cheaper than replacing a melted order.

Packing Heavy Glass Jars Without Breakage
Now the smash problem. Candles are far heavier than they look, and that mass means they hit hard when a box is dropped and build momentum against each other in multi-candle orders. Always ship candles in a box, never a bubble mailer — a mailer offers no crush protection for glass. Wrap each jar individually in bubble wrap, and in multi-candle orders keep the jars from touching by using dividers or generous void fill, because glass-on-glass contact is how a single drop cracks two candles at once.
Orientation and fill finish the job. Pack candles upright with the wick side up so the wax sets evenly and the lid protects the top, and fill every void so nothing shifts in transit — a candle that can move is a candle that can hit the box wall. The heavier the order, the more the outer box and its seams matter; a sturdy box with H-taped seams handles the weight that would burst a lightweight carton. Cushion for the drop, immobilize for the journey, and the glass survives.
The Etsy Candle Seller's Playbook
Candle selling is seasonal and margin-sensitive, and shipping is where both pressures meet. Demand spikes around the holidays (cool-weather shipping, easy) but summer orders carry real melt liability, so experienced sellers build heat handling into their pricing rather than absorbing surprise expedited costs or replacement orders. Some pause or add a heat-season surcharge for hot-climate destinations; others simply bake the cost of an occasional ice pack and 2-day upgrade into every price. The worst approach is ignoring summer and eating a run of melted-candle refunds.
Know the difference between real transit melt and a customer misunderstanding, because it changes how you respond. A candle that arrived fully liquefied from heat can often be re-set by letting it harden undisturbed in the jar — it usually still burns, if unevenly — while 'melted' complaints are frequently just tunneling (an uneven burn from use), which isn't a shipping fault at all. Clear photos of the candle before shipping and a stated hot-weather policy protect you on both fronts. Handle heat proactively and the candle business ships smoothly; ignore it and summer quietly erodes your margin.
