Mercari Shipping Guide for Sellers
Mercari gives sellers more shipping flexibility than most resale platforms. You can use Mercari's prepaid labels (with rates negotiated by the platform) or arrange your own shipping through any carrier of your choice. This flexibility is valuable for sellers with heavier items, unusual package sizes, or access to discounted carrier rates.
Understanding both options — and knowing when to use each — can meaningfully improve your margins, especially if you're selling items that don't fit neatly into Mercari's prepaid label tiers.
Mercari Prepaid Labels
Mercari offers prepaid labels through three main carrier integrations: USPS, UPS, and FedEx. Rates are based on weight tiers and are generally competitive with commercial shipping rates. When you list an item, you set the shipping cost (or use Mercari's suggested rate), and after a sale, you print the label through the app.
Mercari's Prepaid labels cover USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, UPS Ground, and FedEx Home Delivery depending on weight and your selection. For small, lightweight items under 1 lb, USPS Ground Advantage is usually the cheapest. For heavier items or time-sensitive shipments, Priority Mail or UPS Ground may make more sense.
- Under 8 oz: USPS Ground Advantage is cheapest (around $3–4 with Mercari rates)
- 8 oz – 5 lbs: compare USPS Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail based on speed needs
- 5–50 lbs: UPS Ground or FedEx often cheaper for heavier parcels
- Oversized items: seller-arranged shipping may be necessary
Seller-Arranged Shipping
If you choose to arrange your own shipping, select 'Seller ships independently' when listing. You're responsible for purchasing postage separately, packaging, and ensuring delivery. You enter the tracking number into the Mercari app after shipping. The buyer pays a shipping cost that you set at listing.
Seller-arranged shipping is advantageous for large, heavy, or oddly shaped items that don't fit standard carrier pricing tiers, or if you have access to discounted rates through your own carrier account. It's also useful for local delivery or freight shipments that can't be handled through standard parcel services.
⚠️ If you use seller-arranged shipping, you must enter a valid tracking number. Mercari holds payment until tracking confirms delivery. Without a tracking number, Mercari cannot release funds and the transaction may be subject to dispute.
Packaging Standards and Best Practices
Unlike some platforms, Mercari doesn't inspect packaging quality before shipment. But buyers do rate sellers on packaging, and poor packaging leading to damage is one of the fastest ways to collect negative reviews. A few minutes of careful packing protects your seller rating.
Electronics should always be bubble-wrapped and placed in snug boxes with foam or crumpled paper fill. Clothing can go into poly mailers for lightweight items. Fragile items like ceramics or glassware need double-boxing with substantial cushioning. Take photos of items before and after packing — this is your primary protection if a buyer claims damage.
- Always use a new or near-new box — damaged boxes signal a damaged item
- Electronics: bubble wrap, snug box, minimum 2 inches of fill
- Clothing and soft goods: poly mailer or box with tissue paper
- Fragile items: double-box with 2 inches of cushioning in each box
- Include a printed or handwritten packing slip with the order
- Photo-document the item and packed box before sealing
Shipping Times and Buyer Expectations
Mercari expects sellers to ship within 3 business days of a sale. If you go beyond that window without communication, buyers can cancel the order. Shipping quickly — within 1–2 business days — consistently boosts your seller rating and can earn you 'Fast Shipper' badges that increase listing visibility.
After shipping, enter the tracking number in the app immediately. Mercari sends tracking updates to buyers automatically once a tracking number is entered. Buyers can rate the transaction as soon as they confirm receipt, or Mercari auto-releases payment 3 days after delivery confirmation.
💡 If you can't ship within 3 days due to circumstances beyond your control, message the buyer proactively. Buyers who receive communication are significantly less likely to cancel or leave negative feedback than buyers who are left wondering about their order.
